Whilst I'm currently regretting the order, as I can't really afford it and I know it's only the tip of the iceberg as far a full digital set-up is concerned, I hope that it will overcome my laziness barrier. My current "workflow" is something like this:
— Order film. Wait.
— Film arrives. Shoot.
— Put film in for processing. Wait.
— Collect film.
— Scan selected frames.
— Edit.
Whereas my zippy new system should be something like:
— Shoot.
— Edit.
Which will hopefully encourage a lot more shooting and, as there is no chance of "wasting" some expensive film, a lot more experimentation. Good things.
Obviously there are downsides; the biggest one for me, although probably obscure to a lot of people, is the lack of split-image focusing. The split-image method allows precise manual focus, which is especially important at wide apertures. I'm not sure how I will get on with judging focus purely by eye or trusting an autofocus system.
I will certainly not be abandoning my beautiful film kit, not least because I know it like the back of my hand, but I will only be able to carry one camera at a time and I think this will most frequently be digital. Anyway, wish me well in my brave new world, I'll see how it goes in the next couple of months.
